North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the Sea of Japan on Thursday.
The Hwasong-17 missile is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and, according to North Korea, could threaten US soil. On Friday, the North Korean government even released a video of the missile starring the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un.
The White House appeared to confirm the seriousness of the North Korean missile test in a statement condemning North Korea’s actions and warning that it would take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the USA and its allies.
“The door is not closed for diplomacy, but Pyongyang must immediately stop its destabilizing actions,” said Biden government spokeswoman Jen Psaki. “The United States will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the Republic of Korea and its Japanese allies,” the US White House warned.
