Drums of war with Iran: Trump is briefed on military options as air-defence systems deploy around Mar-a-Lago

Trump was reportedly briefed at the White House on military options for Iran, while NORAD and the Secret Service confirm air-defence assets were deployed in and around Mar-a-Lago. Authorities have not linked the two.

President Donald Trump was reportedly briefed at the White House on possible military options concerning Iran, Fox News said in a post on Friday, October 30. According to the network, the meeting included the top US commander in the Middle East, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine. It followed a similar briefing by Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday, while US allies in the region have been warned that American strikes may resume after the midterm elections of Tuesday, November 3. The reports have not been confirmed by the White House.

At the same time, air-defence assets were deployed around Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump’s residence, at the request of the US Secret Service. The deployment was confirmed in written statements by the Secret Service and by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) together with US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM). The local station WPBF published the statements. Citing federal officials, it writes that surface-to-air missile systems were also deployed at Donald J. Trump International Airport, to protect against aircraft and drones.

What the Secret Service and NORAD say

The Secret Service did not explain what led to the decision. Its statement says: “The U.S. Secret Service operates in a heightened threat environment and we continuously adapt our protective operations to integrate cutting-edge tools, technology and methods to secure our protectees. At the request of the Secret Service, NORAD and U.S. Northern Command are providing counter-unmanned aircraft system capabilities in support of our protective operations.”

NORAD says that, at the Secret Service’s request and within the two commands’ responsibilities, it deployed ground-based air-defence assets in and around Mar-a-Lago. “Due to security considerations, we cannot provide details on tactics, techniques and procedures,” it adds, referring further questions to the Secret Service. Neither statement names a specific threat or the specific system deployed, and the authorities have not revealed the reason for the deployment.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also issued two temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) in the area. The first, a VIP-category restriction, covers West Palm Beach from Friday, October 30 to Sunday, November 1. The second, a security-category one, applies to Palm Beach on Friday, October 30.

No link drawn to Iran

The authorities have not connected the air defence at Mar-a-Lago to Iran. The two developments are reported together because they come at the same moment. Earlier in the week Adm. Brad Cooper briefed Trump on strike options, as we reported in our report on the Vance letter. The restricted airspace over the Florida residence was already in the news on October 24, when a NORAD F-16 intercepted an aircraft that had entered it.
