General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has unveiled Wildfire, a clean-sheet uncrewed aircraft designed to combine long endurance and heavy payload capacity with a lower cost structure suitable for larger fleets and higher-risk combat missions.
The company presented the aircraft on September 10 as its candidate for the U.S. Air Force’s Massed Modular Aircraft competition, managed through the Defense Innovation Unit. The programme is seeking a more affordable and adaptable complement or alternative to the MQ-9A Reaper for operations in which commanders may need mass, long range and autonomous coordination.
Wildfire is described by General Atomics as a medium-altitude, long-endurance platform built with lower-cost components and a modular architecture. The manufacturer calls it “attrition-tolerant,” meaning it is intended to operate in situations where the risk of losing aircraft is higher than would be acceptable for a small fleet of expensive, highly specialised systems.
General Atomics claims a ferry range exceeding 8,000 nautical miles. It also says the aircraft can carry two Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles or four Joint Strike Missiles, in addition to other combinations of weapons, sensors and launched effects. These figures remain company claims and will ultimately require validation through testing and the government selection process.
The LRASM and JSM payload configurations identify maritime strike as one of the roles included in the design. The company is presenting the aircraft as a way to add surveillance, targeting and weapons capacity without assigning every mission to crewed bombers or fighters.
Autonomy is central to the proposal. The company says Wildfire will use experience from its FQ-42A Collaborative Combat Aircraft work and will support networked control of multiple aircraft by a much smaller number of operators. The Massed Modular Aircraft programme also calls for the integration of government-provided autonomy software.
The aircraft is planned to use proliferated low-Earth-orbit satellite communications. General Atomics says such connectivity would provide lower latency and additional routing options for long-range operations.
General Atomics argues that its existing factories and supplier network could deliver Wildfire years before the programme’s fiscal year 2031 reference timeline and produce more than twice as many aircraft in the same period. The production estimates are part of the company’s proposal and have not yet been independently demonstrated.
The company is positioning Wildfire below the MQ-9B rather than as a universal successor. The larger and more capable MQ-9B is intended for a wide range of missions, including maritime surveillance, anti-submarine roles and airborne early warning experiments. Wildfire is being marketed as a focused platform for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike missions where affordability and numbers matter more than carrying every possible sensor.
The aircraft remains a proposal for the Massed Modular Aircraft competition. Its acquisition cost, mission-system integration, autonomous performance and production claims have not yet been independently demonstrated.
